Given the needs of an apartment residential building neighbours in Esplugues de Llobregat, we’re asked about the feasibility of installing an elevator in the building’s stairwell. The commission turns out to be a significant challenge, given the reduced measures of the space, in addition to the height difference between the stairs ground level and street level. For the elevator, we proposed a 1-person cabin with minimal dimensions. The stairs layout is changed, bringing it back into the interior ventilation patio, while preserving the kitchen galleries ventilation as much as possible.
The structural complexity of this intervention would be quite the endevour, given the implication of essentially breaking the building in two, as the stairwell sits between the street and block interior apartments.

The proposed staircase is a semi-closed box with a perforated metal sheet, that ensures constant ventilation and visuals between the stairs and the exterior while keeping the neighbors privacy as priority. The projected staircase consists in a mix between straight and curved runs, with six curved steps that make it possible to rise the difference between levels in such a tight space. For the elevator shaft’s skin the same perforated sheet-metal is used in order to not completely break the visual between the landings and the interior patio and the staircase.
